In IDW Publishing's new miniseries, writer Matt Venne takes some big liberties with what has been established thus far as historical fact to weave a fantastic premise into a seemingly straightforward morality and survival story. I was struck by the art, which is very reminiscent of 1960's comics artwork. Decent and interesting enough to wait for the subsequent issues.

In this new miniseries, it's the third century A.D. and the tentacles of the Roman Empire have entwined the British Isles. Marcus Malleoulus, veteran of countless military campaigns, has been betrayed by the whim of a tyrant. Now, banished beyond Hadrian's Wall, he faces untold dangers as he fights his way back... determined to survive until revenge is his! Story by Matt Venne; Art by Gordon Purcell

2000 AD is a multi-awarded, long-running and still-ongoing weekly British science fiction-oriented comics anthology that serializes a number of separate stories each issue (called a "prog") that has been at the cutting edge of contemporary pop culture since it’s first publication by IPC Magazines in February 26, 1997. IPC, later Fleetway, continued to produce the title until 2000, when it was bought by Rebellion Developments. Due in part to its weekly publication schedule, it is one of only a few comics to surpass 1,600 issues. It is most noted for its Judge Dredd stories, and has been contributed to by a number of artists and writers who became renowned in the field internationally, such as Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Grant Morrison, Bryan Talbot, Brian Bolland, Garth Ennis and Mike McMahon.

Abraham "Abe" Sapien (born Langdon Everett Caul) is a fictional character in the comic book series Hellboy, created by Mike Mignola. He is identified as an Icthyo sapiens, similar to a merman. As well as regular appearances in Hellboy and B.P.R.D., Sapien has also previously starred in his own one-shot comic, Abe Sapien: Drums of the Dead by Brian McDonald and Derek Thompson, and the mini-series Abe Sapien: The Drowning by Mike Mignola. For this next one-shot Mike Mignola and John Arcudi team with newcomer Patric Reynolds, who made his professional debut this summer on MySpace Dark Horse Presents. I seemed to have noticed a previous post of the mini-series here before, but current searches have yielded nothing. Please, if anyone has posted the miniseries already let me know so that I won't post it anymore. Thanks.

In his earliest days as an agent of the B.P.R.D., Abe Sapien is sent on a simple mission to investigate a haunting following the death of a young boy. What he finds there is far stranger and more deadly. Writers: Mike Mignola, John Arcudi; Penciler/Inker/Cover: Dave Johnson; Colorer: Dave Stewart

With that odd and somewhat juvenile title, you'd think it's going to be one of those initial-issue instant flops. On the the other hand, given Image Comics' current track record, what with The Walking Dead, Chew, The Viking, King City, et al., which I daresay puts Image ahead of Vertigo so far in the area of alternatives to the superhero genre (I have to admit I'm biased--the first three titles just mentioned are my top three choices for best ongoing series, in order), you'd mutter to yourself, hmm... perhaps it's worth a look. You'd better. For you won't regret it. Nor did IGN reviewer Richard George, who gave this first issue an "Impressive" 8.3 out of 10 rating. Writer AJ Lieberman and artist Riley Rossmo together put on a dazzling display. Let's hope they can keep it up a la The Walking Dead, Chew or The Viking...

#268. Tarzan of the Apes (1972)

Người đăng: Unknown on Thứ Tư, 28 tháng 10, 2009

The American artist Burne Hogarth (25th December 1911 - 28th January 1996) specialized in drawing the dynamic anatomy of the human body and animals, as can be best seen in his rendition of 'Tarzan'. He studied at the Chicago Art Institute from age 12, and got his first cartoon job at 15, when he became the assistant at the Associated Editors Syndicate. At this time, he was assigned to illustrate a series called 'Famous Churches of the World'. In 1929, Hogarth created his first comic strip for the Barnet Brown Company, called 'Ivy Hemmanhaw'. A year later, he came up with 'Odd Occupations and Strange Accidents' for Ledd Features Syndicate.
After a couple of years working as an editor, advertising artist and panel illustrator, Hogarth found employment with the King Features Syndicate in 1934. Now located in New York, he did the pirate strip 'Pieces of Eight' with scripts by Charles Driscoll, starting in 1935. Two years later, Hogarth had a breakthrough when the United Features Syndicate hired him to take over the 'Tarzan' strip from Harold Foster. He drew the 'Tarzan' Sunday page for twelve years, from 1937 to 1945 and from 1947 to 1950, bringing it to new artistic heights.
During the 1945-1947 interlude, due to a dispute with his syndicate, Hogarth moved over to the Robert Hall Syndicate, where he created 'Drago', the adventures of a young Argentine nobleman battling post war Nazis in South America. While being in his second run on 'Tarzan', he additionally created 'Miracle Jones' for United Features, his first and only humorous series. In 1950 he completely abandoned his own comics production, to devote all his time to teaching at the Cartoonists and Illustrators School (later the School of Visual Arts), which he had founded with Silas Rhodes back in 1947. Hogarth taught at this school until 1970, and also authored a series of books on drawing and anatomy.
In 1972, years after his final professional comics work, Hogarth returned to the field with a new 'Tarzan' book, adapting Burroughs first novel, 'Taran of the Apes'.

Titanium Rain Double-Sized Relaunch, Book 1 (Of 2), Chapters 1 & 2
CBR | Nov 2009 | 52 Pages | 32.1 MB
Titanium Rain was supposed to be a twelve issue, bi-monthly comic book limited series techno-thriller-sci-fi epic to be published by then Archaia Studios Press, written by Josh Finney with art by Josh Finney and Kat Rocha. Issue #1 was released last June 5, 2008 to raves from fans and critics alike. Unfortunately due to unforeseen restructuring by Archaia we have never seen issue 2 and beyond. Now, thanks to Archaia being back on track, we are finally getting Titanium Rain, though with some changes to the series: instead of being a 12 issue series it’s now going to start with 2 double issues so we’ll see issues 1-2 for this month and (hopefully) issues 3-4 in the next one. The heart of Titanium Rain is contrasts and dynamic opposites, deep philosophy and gripping action side by side. This thematic tension drives every page from a simple game of poker becoming a vehicle for exposition and a metaphor for global geopolitics circa 2031, to the harrowing dogfight at the end of the book. The Art itself is fantastic, pushing the envelope for comic books; it is ultra-realistic, nice and clean, the faces of the characters so well-defined and represented you'd almost think they are real people rendered into art by software. This helps set the book up so well it gives you the futuristic feel to go along with the setting. Well worth the download. This is one series I'd immediately buy.

The premise: In the year 2031 a civil war in China has spiraled into global conflict. After the assassination of Chairman P'eng (China's supreme military leader), General Kao Shen of the PLA decides it's time for China to return to its former imperial glory and declares himself Emperor of China. The United States is pulled into the conflict when Kao Shen launches a sneak attack against Japan in an effort to goad the nation into war. The story follows US Airforce pilot, Alec Killian, and the other members of the 704th Phoenix Tactical Fighter Squadron stationed on the front lines of the conflict at Mamoru Air Base, a converted civilian airport located on Hainan Island. The pilots of Phoenix Squadron the fly F-35X Hellcat II, a fictional variant of the Joint Strike Fighter with forward-swept wings.

Titanium Rain is an amazing book, hands down. The contradictions make the work all the more exciting--it’s a future alternate-history story. A dense, literate work layered with metaphor and symbolism that is instantly accessible. It’s a thrilling war comic with an artistic soul. It’s cyberpunk action with a humanistic streak. It’s a Bruckheimer-esque thrill ride with an IQ above 130. It’s a high-octane pulse-pounding meditation on the nature of the universe. And finally it’s the best comic you haven’t read...yet! -- Michael Colbert, comicsbulletin.com

To be alive is to be at odds with the world. Man against nature. Man against man. The instinct to survive is what has made us who we are. In the year 2031 mankind's survival instinct is put to the test when a civil war in China spirals into global conflict. Nations are destroyed. Millions are killed. And for many, like US Air Force pilot Alec Killian, survival will mean shedding some of his humanity in exchange for biotech and machine. Is this the ultimate corruption of nature? Or the birth pains of a new chapter in mankind's evolution? From the team who brought you the acclaimed cyberpunk series Utopiates comes a sci-fi war epic for the post-millennial age.

Dark Reign: The List is a collection of one-shots dealing with different characters in the Marvel Universe who are hunted by Osborn as based on a checklist he had made of those he thinks most dangerous to him. It sets the status quo for many books. In The List: Hulk Norman Osborn emphatically decides that now permanently-puny Bruce Banner and his son Skaar are threats, and sends Moonstone and a tricked-out Victoria Hand to deal with him. As per usual where the Dark Avengers are concerned, the battle is sort of dirty and underhanded, and therein lies the fun of it

Fabian Nicieza and Ramon Bach's Azrael #1 takes its brooding anti-hero and has him make some difficult moral decisions without ever pushing him too far into the tired category of urban vigilantes willing to kill in order to clean up the streets. In many ways this first issue of DC Comics' new monthly series takes some daring, yet just the right amount of understated steps in the right direction. The artwork, on the other hand seems out of sync with the story and where it is going. Still, better than average.

Following the events of 'The Eighth Deadly Sin' in BATMAN ANNUAL #27 and DETECTIVE COMICS ANNUAL #11, the new monthly series starring Death's Dark Knight begins! Người đăng: Unknown on Thứ Tư, 21 tháng 10, 2009

In 1967 he was chosen by Robert Hodes of ERB, Inc. to do the daily and SundayTarzan strips for United Feature Syndicate. The strips had drifted far from the Burroughs vision and Russ was committed to bring the strip much closer to the style of the original Tarzan novels. Each week he wrote and illustrated -- with the assistance of artist Bill Stout -- the large colour Sunday page and six daily strips. His illustration and writing abilities brought a quality and accuracy to the strip that had not been seen since the days of Foster and Hogarth in the '30s and '40s.

Asylum of Horrors is a horror anthology series published by Asylum Press. So far there are three issues planned, with issue #3 slated for "Winter 2009." Inasmuch as the first two issues have been released just prior to Halloween in the U.S., that schedule is doubtful. Anyway both issues offer enough scary and gory stories to satisfy most hungry horror fans. Intended for mature readers.

Giant sized first issue! The inmates at the ASYLUM bring you a new breed of horror. This anthology features 13 stories from the best writer’s and artists in the industry. In “Human Growth Hormone” by Frank Forte, a geeks love for a girl drives him to desperate measures. “The Last Line” explores a man’s bizarre train ride. Kevin Colden conjures up a Satanic yarn of death. Other tales include; “Love or Obsession” by Kudranski, “Madness” a Lovecraftian horror tale, “The Parts” by Sekuloski and “Ruined Earth-CARNIGOR” an apocalyptic zombie tale by Billy George. Two one page shockers by fan-fave Nenad Gucunja. Marcin Ponomarew brings a tale of Lovecraftian horrors. Plenty of creep, gore and twists for fans of horror comics old and new. Writers and Artists: Frank Forte, Symon Kudranski, Kevin Colden, Billy George, Riste Sekuloski, Nenad Gucunja, Aaron Rintoul, Marcin Ponomarew, J.C. Wong, Robert S. Rhine.

This is the dazzling first five-issue miniseries from Warren Ellis and new talent Facundo Percio. Don't look now but we will surely see a movie based on this character. “She floats and leaps around the city like she’s Daredevil, Lara Croft and a character from Crouching Tiger all rolled into one,” Warren Ellis says, shedding (just a little) more light on his title character, “but no-one can get a good look at her. A lot of people don’t even think she’s real... She’s real,” Ellis confirms. “It’s the city of New Ataraxia that might not be real. And yet there she is in this weird retropolis out of American 1950’s science fiction magazines, disrupting the activities of the War Department, Magnetic Science and the Metropolitan Police, apparently working for no-one but herself… because no-one living there would believe who she’s working for.” Also included is the Artbook, "The New Ataraxia Mission" released April 2009.
